About the event
Oli, or chanting, was used for almost any occasion—from invoking protection and abundance to storytelling, genealogy, and hula composition. Whether it’s the conversational style of kepakepa, the vibrato of olioli kāholo, or the poetic nuances of hoʻāeae, oli carries our history and thoughts in every chant. Chanting played an essential role in preserving our past, as Oli was the primary way to pass down history before written language existed.
